Congratulations to our new Life Member

Today marks International Museum Day around the world and here in Western Australia many of you are celebrating this week by holding special events, activities, and public talks engagining the community in your collections and the the stories they tell.
This year the theme of International Museum Day is Social Harmony. The basis of social harmony lies in dialogue, tolerance, coexistence and development – ‘to agree but to stand out, to look for common ground but to keep the difference’. In Western Australia we are proud of our diverse cultural heritage and our museums and galleries are important places where that culture is expressed. Our art, our stories, our history all unfold through the objects we collect.
It is fitting that today I can announce that Sally Anne Hasluck has been awarded Life Membership of Museums Australia by our National Council for her service to museums and to the sector nationally.

Sally Anne's outstanding professional contributions over more than three decades, beginning with her role as inaugural curator at Claremont Museum (1975––1989), then later as Director; and her formation there of the first non-arts Friends Association in WA. We pay tribute to her many years of service as a Trustee of the WA Museum (1994—2001), including a period as deputy chair (1994––1998); and to her many personal honours and awards, which include Citizen of the Year (1993) in Claremont; and the Premier's WA History Award (inaugural), also in 1993. Her advocacy of important causes on behalf of professional development of museums locally and nationally have been widely appreciated by Museums Australia and colleagues nationally.

The various offices she has held in Western Australia include the state branch of the Museums Association of Australia (MAA), and later of Museums Australia, as both Vice-President and President covering the period 1978—1987. Her years of service recently as a Council member of the National Museum of Australia (2004––2010) seem a fitting national coda to so many years of service on various sectoral boards.

We congratulate Sally Anne for her outstanding service, and wish her all the best.
