Make our Voice Heard! Comment on the Ministers Cultural Policy Forum

Minister Peter Garrett made an important speech to the National Press Club on 27th October regarding the need for a national cultural policy.

An on-line forum has now been established to gather input from the general public.
The site provides access to the National Cultural Policy proposed framework, and
a link to his speech.

It is important to ensure that the voice of our sector is heard and represented fairly in this debate, and so I encourage you to login and make comment.

You can do this several ways:
- by adding your own ideas as a new thread
- by reading through the existing threads and commenting on these
- by supporting those who have added threads about the collections sector in particular

You can use this site to share some of that discussion and to encourage others to participate.

To read some of Museums Australia's views attached are imporant statements about Museums and Education, and Caring for Our Culture.

If you have never posted a comment on an on-line forum, now is the time to start.

Let's not get left out!

Let's not let this discussion be overtaken by arguements about opera and film.
There are very limited comments on the site at present that address the collections/museum/galleries sector.
Here are a few:

1 What positive steps would you like to see to advance Australian Culture? See comments by: “hayley” 18/11 “pinknantucket” 22/11/09, “flipflop” 16/12,

2 What other issues do you think are important? See “ruth patterson” 28/10, “pinknantucket” 22/11, “LBA412” 5/12; “lynw” 11/12

3 What do you think should be priorities for a national cultural policy? comments by “pinknantucket” 22/11/09, “markse” 26/11,

As a start lets all login an support these comments.
When I visited Russia in 1988 I was impressed by the fact that all their museums had been restored as far as possibe to their pre-war glory.
When I queried this I was told that the first thing that was necessary after the war was to remind people of who they were - only in Museums could they find their heritage.- and in re-dbuilding their museums they became a united nation.
If Museums are so improtant to Russia why not to Australia. Because we have become a multicultural nation it would be easy for all that is Australia to become lost in the multicultural soup. Where else but in Museums can our children find what is important in their heritage. The preservation of our culture should be most important to our goivernment at all levels - or do they fear an educated public?
