Can interpretation for children be fun as well as educational?
I'm keen to hear from anyone who has had a great experience in a gallery or museum relating to childrens interpretation. Much of the interpretation I have seen is very focussed on curriculum outcomes and as such is often dull - does anyone know where they do it really well? The only one I have heard of is Kelvingrove in Glasgow http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/page.cfm?venueid=4&itemid=35

It seems no-one has replied to this - but there most be lots of fun children's stuff going on in Australia! My particular interest at the moment is writing/interpreting for teenagers. Quite a few sites are 'tackling teens' in the UK. Most of it relies on teenagers being inolved in producing the interpretation. Does anyone out there have any examples of where it is being done well?

I've just been to an AHI event at London Zoo. We looked at the interpretation in the new Animal Adventure section (formerly called the children's zoo). It is fab - all written in rhyme for younger children (4-6s) but just rude enough to appeal to older children. It's beautifully illustrated too. If you are over here, take a look. The Galapagos tortoise display was great too. This included an electronic device where people could compare their weight to that of the giant tortoises! And one where people could vote about whether they thought it was accepatable for people to visit the Galapagos or not.

I know that the City of Melville at their Heathcote and Wireless Hill sites have being doing some really interesting things with upper primary and teenage students - I'll get Yolanda to post some comments.
Also Rosemary at Kodja Place who attended your workshop in Perth last year (doesn't time fly) has started a project there inspired by your ideas. I'll see if she can post something as well,

Thanks for your comments. It would be great to hear from Yolanda and Rosemary. It's good to know that Rosemary found inspiration at my workshop - hearing things like that make it all worthwhile. I am hoping to get back to Australia next year (not just because we've had another rubbish summer here!). Maybe we could sort out a workshop in Perth on interpretation for older children/teenagers?
