Keeping it real - museums and their collections?

What are the responsibilities of museums and art galleries when they accept gifts?
Museums and their collections, within our communities and our universities, form a vibrant and essential part of our cultural heritage, of which they are custodians and guardians. While often benefiting from great community support in periods of economic crisis they frequently come under intense pressure to sell some of their collections.
